What I Actually Like About Dragon Ball Super

In my review of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, I let my dislike of Dragon Ball Super come out all over the place and I'm still trying to get the stains out. But I just watched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and I decided that instead of reviewing it I would write a blog post about the few things I actually really like about Super.

The first of which is Super Hero itself. This movie is great. It has a lot of references to older Dragon Ball stuff, making it a great love letter/ledbetter to Dragon Ball as a whole. And the animation style is great. I actually love it when they try to make 3D animation look like it's hand drawn, and this is the best example I've seen it that.

I also love when Dragon Ball allows heroes other than Goku to take the lead. It's why the Garlic Jr. Saga is my favourite part of DBZ.

The last and best part of Super Hero is they gave Piccolo a kitten phone case and ring tone. So the movie is 10/10, no notes.

The other thing I like about Super is that they made Broly and Gogeta part of the main timeline. I also love what they've done with Broly by giving him a chance to be one of the good guys. Dragon Ball's best characters are always the former villains that Goku befriends, from Tien to Majin Buu but not Yamcha. Broly has always been one of my favourite characters so it's about time he got the Goku BFF rehabilitation treatment.

And that's about it. It's not a lot, but it's something. Super isn't great overall, and as one of the few fans of Dragon Ball GT I'll probably never fully accept it unless they finally canonize Super Saiyan 4.
